what are some good suggestions of great cover songs all these wonderful bands have done? i've come across many, but I know there are many I've missed. I'm thinking of making a little cd or 2 or 3 of a bunch of great cover songs with the bands own flavor added in. any suggestions?

First off, check out Keller Williams. He covers everybody, Billy Joel, Prince, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, John Prine, The Stones, Skynyrd, Zappa. He does two Hendrix songs I've rarely seen elsewhere as well- Up From the Skies and The Wind Cries Mary.

3/24/05 Garaj Mahal does a wonderfully funky Fire on the Mountain.

Also check out Raq 4/2/05. They do a pair of terrific Zappa covers in Andy and Carolina Hardcore Ecstacy. And they close with a mighty fine Whipping Post. And if you like the Zappa, Yonder Mountain String Band does a great bluegrassy version of I'm the Slime. And, for that matter, KVHW does City of Tiny Lights and Illinois Enema Bandit. You could almost do an all-Zappa covers CD. (check out Melvin Seals show from 1/25/03 for some very cool Zappa stuff)

Also, the Fareed Haque group plays two very interesting CSNY covers- 3/19/04 they play a very cool Carry On and on 5/18/02 they open with Helpless.

Shall I continue? There's plenty more....

If you like bluegrass...you've got to check out Danny Barnes

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=27680

You can't miss with the cover of Sympathy for the Devil on this show...you may want to cut the track...a long intro is tracked with the song...but it's def worth a listen. Also covers Faces (early Rod Stewart), Ohh La La in this show.

Other Danny covers include:
Beck's Loser
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=20588
Man of Constant Sorrow (segway from an original "Death Trip"
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=27822

He also covers plenty of bluegrass standards.
But I have to say...

If you like any of the covers...check out his original stuff too...he is one of the best songwriters in the biz...plays a mean guitar and doesn't take any crap from a guitar either. He's influenced bands like Yonder Mountain String Band who cover many of his tracks...and toured most recently with Tim O'Brien's Cornbread Nation.

Good Luck!

Great topic! Some of my favorite covers of 60's songs that I've run across are:

The Radiators (with David Bromberg sitting in) doing the old Dave Clark Five tune "I Like It Like That"
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=19680

John Cipollina and Barry Melton Band doing "Sloop John B" kind of ragged and funky, which really fit the song lyrics better than the bouncy Beach Boys version.
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=31713

Wayne Hancock does a great "Folsom Prison Blues"

San Diego, CA Singer/songwriter Tristan Prettyman does a great acoustic version of Britney Spear's "Toxic"
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=32879

and a band called "Four Way Free" does a great rock and roll version of
"I Just Wanna Love You/Toxic" (Justin Timberlake/Britney Spears) that will really add to the CD:

And John Butler Trio did a duet with Tristan Prettyman at the closing show of their tour together doing a Bob Marley cover of "No Woman No Cry" really a beautiful acoustic version:

Virtually everything Hayseed Dixie does is a cover, bluegrass versions of rock standards.
http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=Hayseed%20Dixie
Vida did a nice cover of George Clinton's "Cosmic Slop" in a lot of their shows
http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&cat=Vida
and of Clinton's "Maggot Brain"
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=19280
and they also covered Zappa's "Black Napkins"
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=19026
and one of Vida's performances was mostly covers
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=19159
of Funkadelic, Zappa, and Hawkwind (!).
